The Smartest Animal

Once there was a farmer in Lori. Every morning and every evening he plowed (վարում էր) his field with his buffalo (եզ).

One day a wolf saw the farmer and his buffalo working. The wolf was surprised to see a big animal listening to a small animal. He wanted to know more about the buffalo and the man.

After the man had gone home, the wolf spoke to the buffalo. “You are so big and strong. Why do you do everything that the man tells you?” the wolf asked. The buffalo answered, “Oh, the man is very intelligent (խելացի).” The wolf asked, ”Can you tell me how intelligent the man is?” “No, I can’t tell you,” said the buffalo, “but you can ask the man.”

So the next day, the wolf said to the man, “Can I see your intelligence?” The man answered, “It’s at home.” “Can you go home and get it?” asked the wolf. “Yes,” said the man, “but I am afraid that you will kill my buffalo when I am not here. Can I tie you to a tree?”

After the man had tied the wolf up, he didn’t go home to get his intelligence. He took his stick (ճիպոտ) and began hitting the wolf. He was hitting and saying, “Now you know my intelligence. Can you see it?”
